'Other options' for train station ignores public opinion

Confirmation from DRD Minister Danny Kennedy that Translink is considering all site options for Derry's new train station ignores the will of local people, SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood has said.

Responding to the latest Assembly Question from Mr Eastwood, the minister stated that Translink is currently tendering for a design team wh ich will not only be asked to develop a solution for the old station but also “consider all other options”.

Mr Eastwood said: “ This statement flies in the face of the opinion of the overwhelming majority of of people who participated in a public consultation process two years ago . More than two thirds of those who took part backed plans for the refurbishment of the old Waterside station yet the minister has now confirmed that Translink is still exploring proposals for alternative options.

“ The old Waterside station is an important part of Derry's built heritage and it is vital that it is central in the creation of a new public transport hub in the city. The minister's announcement last year that he is planning an integrated transport hub at the old Waterside station was very welcome and I would urge him to commit to funding the project rather than wasting time and money exploring other options,” Mr Eastwood added.
